Usability for Interactive TV

Working for HomeChoice iTV a brand owned by Videonetworks, I promoted the enrichment of Interactive TV services through good navigation and usability, providing an analytical lead on the interface and functionality throughout the development life-cycle.

Spearheading the user centric development of functionality, I ensured the consistency of the interface for all services, including use case analysis, definition and design for task orientated interactions between the customers and the service.

I evaluated new services as they were proposed, producing documentation, task analysis, reports and functionality diagrams.

I developed prototypes and evaluated modeling by utilising user testing and soliciting feedback from end users. These techniques were used to identify future refinements and enhancements to the service.

User testing and competitive analysis was performed in a fully functioning lab equipped with monitoring and surveillance equipment.

My day-to-day work involved the creation of reports and analysis followed and enhanced by flow diagrams, prototypes and design specifications.

Shopping Basket Prototype - Retail Phase 2

The Laura Ashley service demonstration was put together to show how the user would navigate their way through an interactive shopping mall and gather products into a basket. The project was a demonstration of usability using retail phase 2 components.

Payments Project

Use case analysis was followed by extensive navigational flow development. Storyboards were made and tested through cognitive walkthroughs. Eventually a service prototype was developed for testing with a number of users. The interfaces were designed for consistency in design, naming and on-screen prompts, allowing the user to pay by credit card.

The payments project produced a usability evaluation report, database of users, and a specifications document which I wrote to guide the service architects.

Retail Phase 3

Retail Phase 3 was the amalgamation of both Phase 2 and Payments.

What Car? Service development

The What Car? service was developed using Retail Phase 2 components which were re-purposed to make a car search and navigation facility.

The service includes manufactures models, car specifications, private sellers, on-screen magazine, subscription service, membership and contextual advertising.

Top Gear Service development

The Top Gear service was developed using Entertainment components which were re-purposed to make a program navigation system.

The service included video menus and database driven search for scene indexing to pinpoint a specific review on a car or product.
